Program Note:
An Exercise in Madness is inspired by all of the band directors and students who were dedicated to the educational process during the COVID lockdown. The opening statement illustrates the fear and frustration experienced during teaching (and learning) band via Zoom. On a personal note, this passage also has overtones of uncertainty of what the future would bring for students, band programs and composers across the country. The middle section is the hope and faith that all will be “normal” and fulfilling yet again. This hopefulness justified the “exercise in madness” that so many of us practiced and were willing to endure during the lockdown. The conclusion is a restatement of uncertainty and madding fact that “normal” is no longer “normal.” We all must move forward into the future with faith and optimism.
