Every year several thousand ambitious people set out to hike the Appalachian Trail from end to end. For many, it’s a lifelong dream, for many it’s an exercise in willpower, for many it’s a way to find oneself. But for all who attempt a thru hike, it’s a journey filled with unexpected challenges, perils, surprises, and for some…Trail Magic. Known along the AT, Trail Magic is a random act of kindness, often from a stranger, meant to encourage and relieve thru hikers during their 2178 mile journey from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine.

“Trail Magic” is meant to represent the majesty of the Appalachian Trail, the daunting journey of the thru hiker, and the spirit of the many individuals who create their special form of Trail Magic along the Appalachian Trail every season.

Trail Magic is dedicated to the many thru hikers who have formerly and are currently hiking the trail, especially my cousin in law Adam Sumner.
