Written for solo flute and piano, emerged from a smaller compositional project, an exercise in impressionistic style which resulted in an early version of the “Autumn” movement. Since “Autumn” was intended to help aid in learning to write in an impressionistic style, the remaining movements explore other compositional techniques.. While listening to Four Seasons, the listen should be able to discern easily the various techniques: wholetone scales, impressionist and minimalist gestures, and twelve-tone writing are among the primary elements used. The movements are deeply related, although each movement is superficially very different from the others.
